What is the message your art is trying to convey?
My art seeks to convey the connection between humanity and nature. By using natural materials like leaves, feathers, and stones, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the environment, promote sustainability and show the rich heritage and culture of our surroundings. Each piece of art is a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our natural world and the importance of conserving it.
When did your creative journey start?
My creative journey began when I was a child, always fascinated by the natural world. However, it truly took form during COVID 19 when I transitioned from Engineering to Art. This shift allowed me to combine my Art skills with my passion for nature, leading to the creation of Vanna Niral.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
My biggest inspirations come from the natural world itself. The intricate patterns on a butterfly's wings, the texture of tree bark, and the vibrant colors of a flower all fuel my creativity. Additionally, I am inspired by artists who use their creativity to drive a sense of wonder in whoever sees it.
What is holding back Sri Lankan creatives?
One major challenge is the lack of platforms and support systems for artists. Many talented individuals struggle to find opportunities to showcase their work and connect with a broader audience. Additionally, there are societal pressure to pursue more traditional career paths, which can slay creative ambitions.
Run us through your creative process?
My creative process begins with spending time in nature, collecting materials that inspire me. Once I have my materials, I spend time studying their textures and forms, imagining how they can be transformed into art. I then carefully plan and execute my designs, always striving to maintain the integrity and beauty of the natural elements. Though the process is very simple it is time consuming and needs a lot of patience to get accurate results.
a. Collecting and cleaning natural canvases.
b. Pressing them between books for at least two weeks, checking on them and cleaning them every two days.
c. Sanitizing and painting on them.
d. Preserving the final artwork between glass in a wooden frame.
Why is art important to Sri Lankan society, especially in a time like this?
Art is a powerful tool for expression and reflection. In times of uncertainty and change, it provides a means for people to process their experiences and emotions. For Sri Lankan society, art also serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and the importance of preserving our natural flora and fauna.
What will the future of creative expression be like?
I believe the future of creative expression will be increasingly interdisciplinary, with artists collaborating across different fields and mediums. Technology will play a significant role, providing new tools and platforms for creation and sharing. However, the core of creative expression will always be the human experience and our connection to the world around us.
What is your major goal as an artist?
My major goal is to shorten the distance between mankind and the natural world. My art raises awareness about cultural and environmental issues and inspires others to appreciate and protect nature. Through my art, I hope to create a dialogue about sustainability and conservation, encouraging people to consider the impact of their actions on the environment.
Do you believe in art collaboration or do you think it affects their individual creative expression?
I strongly believe in the power of collaboration. Working with other artists and creators can bring fresh perspectives and ideas, enhancing the creative process. While it is important to maintain one's individual voice, collaboration can lead to innovative and impactful work that might not be possible alone.
What is effective art: pure catharsis or conscious work?
Effective art can be both pure catharsis and conscious work. Art that comes from a place of deep personal emotion can resonate strongly with others, providing a sense of connection and understanding. At the same time, art that is created with a conscious intention, such as raising awareness about environmental issues, can have a powerful impact on society. The most effective art often combines these elements, drawing on personal experience while addressing broader social or environmental themes.
1. உங்கள் கலை தெரிவிக்க முயற்சிக்கிக்கும் கருத்து என்ன?
எனது கலை மனித நேயத்திற்கும் இயற்கைக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பை வெளிப்படுத்த முயல்கிறது. இலைகள், இறகுகள் மற்றும் கற்கள் போன்ற இயற்கைப் பொருட்களைப் பயன்படுத்துவதன் மூலம் நான் சுற்றுச்சூழலுக்கு மனமார்ந்த பாராட்டவும், சுற்றுச்சூழல் நிலைத்தன்மையை மேம்படுத்தவும், நமது சுற்றுப்புறங்களின் வளமான பாரம்பரியம் மற்றும் கலாச்சாரத்தைக் காட்டவும் ஊக்குவிக்க எதிர்பார்க்கிறேன். ஒவ்வொரு கலையும் நமது இயற்கை உலகின் அழகு, பலவீனம் மற்றும் அதைப் பாதுகாப்பதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நினைவூட்டுகிறது.
2. உங்கள் கலை பயணம் எப்போது ஆரம்பமாகியது?
நான் குழந்தையாக இருந்தபோது எனது கலைப்பயணம் தொடங்கியது, எப்போதும் இயற்கை உலகால் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டேன். இருப்பினும், உண்மையிலேயே கோவிட்19 இன் போது நான் பொறியியலில் இருந்து கலைக்கு மாறியபோது என் கலை பயணம் மீண்டும் உருவானது. இந்த மாற்றம் எனது கலைத் திறன்களை இயற்கையின் மீதான எனது ஆர்வத்துடன் இணைக்க அனுமதித்தது. இதுவே வண்ண நிரல் உருவாக்கத்திற்கு வழிவகுத்தது.
3. உங்களின் மிகப்பெரிய உத்வேகங்கள் யார்?
எனது மிகப்பெரிய உத்வேகங்கள் இயற்கை உலகத்திலிருந்து வந்தவையே. வண்ணத்துப்பூச்சியின் சிறகுகளில் உள்ள சிக்கலான அமைப்பு, மரப்பட்டையின் அமைப்பு மற்றும் ஒரு பூவின் வண்ணங்கள் அனைத்தும் என் படைப்பாற்றலை தூண்டுகின்றன. மேலும், யார் பார்த்தாலும் வியக்கத்தக்க உணர்வைத் தூண்டும் வகையில் தங்கள் படைப்பாற்றலைப் பயன்படுத்தும் கலைஞர்களாலும் நான் ஈர்க்கப்பட்டேன்.
4. எது இலங்கைப் கலைஞர்களைத் தடுத்து நிறுத்துகிறது?
கலைஞர்களுக்கான தளங்கள் மற்றும் ஆதரவு அமைப்புகள் இல்லாதது ஒரு பெரிய சவாலாகும். பல திறமையான கலைஞர்கள் தமது திறமைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தவும் பரந்த பார்வையாளர்களுடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ளவதற்கான வாய்ப்புகளை கண்டறிவதிலும் சிரமப்படுகின்றனர். மேலும் பாரம்பரிய பயணப்பாதையை தொடருமாறு சமூக அழுத்தம் இருப்பதால் பல கலைப்பயண இலட்சியங்கள் சிதைக்கின்றன.
5. எங்களை உங்களின் கலை செயல்பாட்டிற்குள் எடுத்து செல்லமுடியுமா?
எனது கலை படைப்புச் செயல்முறை இயற்கையில் நேரத்தை செலவிடுவதும், என்னை ஊக்குவிக்கும் பொருட்களை சேகரிப்பதில் ஆரம்பிக்கும். எனது பொருட்கள் சேகரித்தவுடன், அவற்றின் அமைப்புகளையும் வடிவங்களையும் படிப்பதில் நேரத்தை செலவிடுவேன், பின் அவற்றை எவ்வாறு கலையாக மாற்றப்படலாம் என்று கற்பனை செய்து பார்ப்பேன். எப்போதும் நான் எனது படைப்புக்கான வடிவமைப்புகளை கவனமாக திட்டமிட்டு செயல்படுத்துவேன், மற்றும் அதில் இயற்கை கூறுகளின் ஒருமைப்பாடு மற்றும் அழகை பராமரிக்க முயற்சி செய்வேன். எனது படைப்பு செயல்முறை மிகவும் எளிமையானது என்றாலும், இதற்கு அதிக நேரத்தை செலவிட வேண்டியுள்ளது மற்றும் துல்லியமான முடிவுகளைப் பெறுவதற்கு நிறைய பொறுமையும் தேவை.

6. இலங்கை சமூகத்திற்கு கலை ஏன் முக்கியமானது, குறிப்பாக இது போன்ற ஒரு காலத்தில்?
கலை என்பது வெளிப்பாடு மற்றும் பிரதிபலிப்புக்கான ஒரு சக்திவாய்ந்த கருவியாகும். நிச்சயமற்ற தன்மையின் போதும் மாற்றங்களிலும், மக்கள் தங்கள் அனுபவங்களையும் உணர்ச்சிகளையும் செயலாக்க இது ஒரு வழியாக அமைகிறது. இலங்கை சமூகத்தைப் பொறுத்தவரை, கலையானது எமது செழுமையான கலாச்சார பாரம்பரியம் மற்றும் எமது இயற்கை தாவர விலங்கினங்களைப் பாதுகாப்பதன் முக்கியத்துவத்தை நினைவூட்டுவதாகவும் உள்ளது.
7. கலை வெளிப்பாட்டின் எதிர்காலம் எப்படி இருக்கும்?
பல்வேறு துறைகள் மற்றும் ஊடகங்களில் கலைஞர்கள் ஒத்துழைப்பதன் மூலம், படைப்பாற்றல் அதிகரிப்பதோடு வெளிப்பாட்டின் எதிர்காலம் பல்துறைசார்ந்ததாக இருக்கும் என்றும் நான் நம்புகிறேன். கலை படைப்பாளிகளை உருவாக்கவும் பகிர்வும் புதிய கருவிகள் மற்றும் தளங்களை வழங்குவதில் தொழில்நுட்பம் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க பங்கை வகிக்கிறது. எவ்வாறாயினும், கலைபடைப்பு வெளிப்பாட்டின் மையமானது எப்போதும் மனித அனுபவமாகவும் நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள உலகத்துடனான தொடர்பாகவும் இருக்க வேண்டும்.
8. கலைஞராகிய உங்களின் முக்கிய குறிக்கோள் என்ன?
மனித குலத்திற்கும் இயற்கை உலகிற்கும் இடையே உள்ள தூரத்தை குறைப்பதே எனது முக்கிய குறிக்கோள். எனது கலை, கலாச்சார மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பிரச்சினைகள் பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்துவதோடு இயற்கையைப் பாராட்டவும் பாதுகாக்கவும் மற்றவர்களை ஊக்குவிக்க தூண்டுவதாக அமையும். அதுமட்டுமின்றி, எனது கலை படைப்பின் மூலம், சுற்றுச்சூழல் நிலைத்தன்மை மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பு பற்றிய உரையாடலை உருவாக்கவும், சுற்றுச்சூழலில் அவர்களின் செயல்பாடுகளால் ஏற்படும் தாக்கத்தை பற்றி கருத்திற்கொள்ளுமாறு மக்களை ஊக்குவிக்கவும் முனைகிறேன்.
9. கலை ஒத்துழைப்பில் உங்களுக்கு நம்பிக்கை உள்ளதா அல்லது அது அவர்களின் தனிப்பட்ட படைப்பு வெளிப்பாட்டைப் பாதிக்கும் என நினைக்கிறீர்களா?
ஒத்துழைப்பு எனும் சக்தியை நான் உறுதியாக நம்புகிறேன். பிற கலைஞர்கள் படைப்பாளர்களுடன் இணைந்து வேலை செய்வது, புதிய முன்னோக்குகளையும் யோசனைகளையும் கொண்டுவர முடியும், மேலும் கலைப்படைப்பு செயல்முறையையும் மேம்படுத்தும். ஒருவரின் தனிப்பட்ட குரலைப் பேணுவது முக்கியம் என்றாலும், ஒத்துழைப்புடன் குழுவாக செயல்படுவதன் மூலம் புதுமையான மற்றும் தாக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடிய வேலைகளை செய்ய வழிவகுக்கும்.
