I believe art has a big effect in changing people’s attitudes and perspectives. That will have a direct impact on society and the economy. A country with a good art and entertainment industry can be developed really well, and it’s a good society to live in.

What is the message your art is trying to convey?
To enjoy the little things in everyday life and making people aware of other cultures: I do documentary photography around the country. I document different cultures, habits and things that are happening around. Most of those things are about culture, tradition and how different people go about their daily lives. I put a lot of aesthetics into it and look for nice stories in a particular community or individual. I bring them out through visual frames. I believe that we all have our cultures and traditions and we should live in harmony.
When did your creative journey start?
It started around Grade 10 when I was 14 years old. I got a camera and starting taking photos, I got good comments so I kept doing it. It started as a hobby and I really enjoyed it. It gave my life some meaning and I’m still going strong.
Who are your biggest inspirations?
Local artists and photographers inspired me in the beginning. But my biggest role model is Steve McCurry who is quite a famous documentary photographer. My style also goes close to that.
What is holding back Sri Lankan creatives?
One thing would be financial problems. To pursue your art you have to spend on your tools. If you’re a painter you have to invest in paints and brushes etc. And also a lot of artists don’t know how to make money out of their work. They are bit hesitant and are not willing to take risks. We also need a strong community for the arts who can share, find inspiration and also platforms to put work out and find exposure.
Run us through your creative process?
First I find inspiration; maybe it’s a book, photo, an incident or something I happen to come across. I get a feeling that there could be a nice story; something that I can bring to a visual frame. Then I put the photographic elements such as shapes, colours and light. And within that visual element I try to bring out all what I’m trying to express. I might take several photographs at that place and I go on to post-production where I like to look more deep into what I captured and sometimes add more details, enhance the photograph. Sometimes I put one photograph or few into a story.
Why is art important to Sri Lankan society, especially in a time like this?
It’s very important. When a country has a good creative industry, then the people have good attitudes. People who have good attitude have good conduct; this has a direct effect on the economy. Art can be seen as a medium that can change people’s behavior. Art talks about humanity, love, friendship, freedom, economy, harmony, diversity, rights and lots more. It’s a medium that can reach people’s mindset and change it. We need responsible citizens to transform a country. We blame the government but the government is the reflection of the people. If people are more responsible towards everything they can bring about change. To make that change, art is a strong medium.
What will the future of creative expression be like?
With the new technology coming like AI and mediums like projection, holograms and new tools that are able to create illustrations very close to a real image; the kind of art that comes out will change. Whatever comes out is a tool for a creative person to use. Even art exists in a dynamic, it isn’t stationary. So with the new technology, art will change how it reaches people.
What is your major goal as an artist?
Photography is visual communication. I can create things that can make a direct impact on people; change their perception and attitude, I can heal them and move them through my photos. This is a medium that brings out what is real. If I can move people through my efforts, that will be my goal.
Do you believe in art collaboration or do you think it affects their individual creative expression?
I do believe in collaboration. I believe by collaborating you can bring something unique and special. If you are collaborating with someone you should make sure it is a proper connection. In a collaboration with two or more people, if someone can’t put their idea out, then that collaboration fails . The collaboration should be a proper one. Collaborators should be on the same page. If you have that you can bring it out really well. Otherwise, being an individual art is also great if you can’t work in collaboration.
What is affective art: pure catharsis or conscious work?
You can plan up to an extent. The rest is up to the universe. You are the right place at the right time. There have been a lot of places where I had happened to have a camera so I was at the right time. It could happen any time. It could happen while I’m coming home, while I’m going on a trip or it could happen when I’m going about it planned. You could never know. In my type of work, which is documentary, it’s better to have a camera all the time. You never know when you will get the right moment. There were several times, where I never planned a thing, but I came across something and it went really well. You can plan things up to an extent. But sometimes even with a plan you won’t get what you want. And I’m not talking about planned photoshoots. In documentary type work, that’s not how it works. Sometimes you can plan and get what you want, and sometimes it’s not what you expect. You have to be very aware and alert.
